Gaining Control through our Senses

Control is an interesting concept. It’s something that most of us crave, but really, it’s something we don’t really actually have the ability to gain over the things we think we want to control. Because most things are outside of our control. We cannot control how other people react to us. We cannot control their behavior. We cannot control the weather or the time, nor can we control what people do with what we put out into the world. Our work, our words, our products, our thoughts - these are all filtered through the lens of the person receiving it, and once it’s out of our hands, it immediately becomes something over which we no longer have any control over.

But that’s not to say that control doesn’t exist. In fact, there are things we can control - our thoughts, our openness, our choices, and our immediate environments.

And of course you know I’m going to say how your environment is key to, well, everything! Within our surroundings we have the means to create more balance, more joy, more abundance, more peace, and that sense of control we all seek. But how do we harness it? By tapping into our senses. Using our senses of sight, touch, taste, sound and smell, we can find easy and immediate ways to ‘control’ our surroundings and bring ourselves to an improved state of being.

Take a look around you - are you surrounding yourself with beautiful things that immediately ignite a positive reaction - of joy or appreciation? Or are things cluttered, worn or unkempt? What do you smell when you’re in the space? Nothing? Something that reminds you you need to clean? Or is it the scent of a favorite flower or candle? What do you hear in your home? Dripping faucets and creaky boards? Or do you hear silence (a very appreciated sound when you’re a parent I must say!), or maybe wonderful music that lights you up? And when you walk through your home, are you greeted by the soft feel of a beautiful rug or warm hardwood floors? Or maybe the sofa invites you with it’s soft fabric and comfortable cushions that feel so lovely against your skin. And when you sit to eat, to nourish yourself, are you using ingredients and eating foods that look, smell and taste amazing?

All of these things are clues to ways that you can actively create a better life for yourself. And by paying attention, you give yourself the gift of a home that supports and energizes you. When we feel supported and cared for, when we appreciate beauty, when we open our spaces to flow and positive energy, we take control of our well being. And that, my friends, is money.
