Spring has Sprung
I know it’s April, but given the fact that we’ve had multiple days of snow this past weekend and I still have my scarves and hats on hand, I feel like I’m writing this prematurely instead of a bit late. But the flowers are blooming, the sun is (finally? temporarily?) shining, and I am once again getting into my Spring Cleaning groove.
If you know me, you know I’m in love with anything that involves organization, decluttering, and design. For me, it’s not only a way to really ensure that my home is clean and tidy, but that it’s in flow and supporting me. So each year (haha, more like each month, but for the sake of this article we’ll stick to year), I start to clear out the clutter, open the windows, and rearrange my decor. The Spring brings with it an energy of newness and growth - a time to blossom and transform. As someone who fundamentally believes that the energy around us is equally important to the energy within us, it seems pretty clear that harnessing this springtime energy to improve our homes is not only beneficial, but essential.
But where to start? Open your windows and doors! Our door is the mouth to our home - it is how the chi or energy flows in, and after a long winter, it will be good to get that energy flowing. And while you’re at it, clean them. Make sure there is nothing obstructing your door so that it can open wide. Tidy in front of it, and make it welcoming - not just to your neighbors, but to the flow of energy coming from the outside in. And if your door is the mouth to your home, the windows are like its eyes - clean off that winter time grime and let your eyes see clearly.
Indoor clutter is a little more complex, and often a lot more daunting. Whether you love the KonMari method, or the Minimalists, or you just do it however, take the time to go through your home and clear out the things that are broken or don’t work, things that no longer serve you, things that maybe you liked once but not anymore, things that could do with some upgrading, and things that you never liked but kept because you felt you should. All that stuff has energy, and if the energy is not matching your vibe, then thank you but no thank you. Let it go, and (responsibly) dispose of, or donate, it.
As I recently told a friend who wasn’t sure about whether to keep some jeans that fit but aren’t currently a style she wears, “if it’s not a hell yes, then it’s a hell no.” Don’t be afraid to let it go. It doesn’t have to be too big or too small or damaged or ugly. Sometimes, it’s just not what we want in our lives as the moment and letting it go is OK. We can give, donate, sell, etc. without the guilt of “maybe I could use this later on.” Because, maybe, someone else could really use it right now.
Truthfully, I don’t really decorate by the season. I like to have things in my home that I love all year round. But there is something to be said about seasonal energy that is so powerful and beautiful, and a great way to shift things in our homes. Something I love is that flowers easily brighten a space and make it feel full of joy. Spring flowers like Tulips, Ranunculus, Daffodils or Hyacinths immediately evoke a sense of freshness in any space. Have a range of vases (that you love and aren’t chipped!). This will allow you to create different styles of arrangements, from full bunches to a simple Forsythia or Cherry Blossom branch. Spring is also a time I change my scented candles from wintery scents to lighter ones.
And because I believe that clearing the clutter is equally important externally as it is internally, this is also a great time to give yourself a little love, and focus on YOU. Mindset is so essential to creating a life that we truly love - even in the most challenging of times. So if we are dedicating time to clearing out what no longer serves us, and bringing in fresh, new energy, we can do that for our minds as well.
There are a few things I like to do to help with a mindset reset. The first is listening to inspirational music (a lot of times I do this while cleansing my home with sage so I’m killing two birds with one stone!). A favorite is a Spotify playlist called I AM Light. I didn't make it and don’t know who the author is, but if you like meditation and mantras and uplifting music, this is a great one. Podcasts are another way I like to find inspiration. Some of my favorites to listen to right now are The Highest Self Podcast with Sahara Rose, On Purpose with Jay Shetty, The Success Revolution with Gemma Benad and Expanded by To be Magnetic (amongst many others!).
And of course books are another fabulous way to help bring in new ideas and help us expand as we work on our mindset. I am currently reading Welcome Home by Suzanne Roynon which focuses on why clearing clutter is more than just ridding ourselves of junk. I also just started reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, and another book on my to read list is Superatractor by Gabrielle Bernstein. And I pretty much always at any time will recommend any and all of Brene Brown’s many books.
Enjoy this season of growth in all the ways it has to offer 💖
